Health and healthcare in South Africa attempt to capture the essence of transformation and trends in the South African health sector. It offers, on the one hand, an overview of recent and current developments in the South African health care system, and on the other, of trends in the health status of the South African population. The book is a follow-up to the well-known Health care in South Africa - structure and dynamics (Van Rensburg, Fourie & Pretorius 1992), published just before the transition to a democratic society. The book retains a strong historical thread, but the focus is generally on the nature of the transformation process, gains made, and failures encountered.
